Overview
ravel by Eurostar from London to Paris and onwards by TGV to Munich. After an overnight stop in Bavaria continue through pretty Bavarian countryside, then via the Alps, to Vienna The journey continues east with a stop in Hungary, before travelling through Transylvania and the Carpathian Mountains, a wonderfully scenic journey, to the Romanian capital Bucharest. Take the Bosfor sleeper train on to Istanbul where we recommend a stay of at least two nights in what we think has to be one of the world’s greatest cities, a magical meeting place of East and West.
From Istanbul take a high-speed train to Ankara and after an overnight stop board the weekly Trans-Asia Express train for a truly epic 2,300km adventure to Iran. In fact it is actually two trains, a Turkish one from Ankara to Tatvan pier, then a ferry across Lake Van, then an Iranian train which heads south east from Van pier to Tehran. Along the way expect some stunning scenery as you pass through remote regions of Eastern Turkey. The whole journey is scheduled to take around 60 hours – a fantastic opportunity to meet friendly local people, including many Iranians who are renowned for their generous hospitality.
A trip on the Trans-Asia Express is like no other, a special experience that will soon dispel any misconceptions that you may have had of one of the world’s’ most enigmatic and misunderstood countries. And that’s even before you have stepped off the train in Tehran.
