Tunisia

Tunisia is an ancient land where millennia of history come alive. Highlights include the astonishing Roman colosseum at El-Jem, the ancient cities of Dougga and Sufetula, charming medinas surrounded by crenellated walls and in the fairytale architecture of the Berbers. Although the history and culture of the country are the biggest draw, it is increasingly popular as a beach destination because of its long coastlines bordering the Mediterranean and crystal-clear waters. The first stop for most tourists travelling to Tunis is the ancient ruins of the city of Carthage in the north of the city. First established by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC, this old-world trading empire was later destroyed by the Romans before being rebuilt as a Roman colony.
